The road has been bumpy and long and somehow it is only the second day of class… yes please throw me a pity party. But, fear not! Some great tools have been learned during this short and intense class.
PR practitioners can be very successful using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. These two programs combine many skills that are already learned and together can create beautiful designs. I am not going to lie, they are tough to learn, but Lynda.com does a great job of helping you through the programs. Photoshop does a great job of editing, moving, and rearranging anything you could need in a publication. You can create, manipulate, and rearrange on photoshop easily. It is for sure one of the most well-known apps for photo creation. InDesign is great for producing publications with text and body copy in them. InDesign has the ability to produce more than Photoshop only because of it’s capabilities and the software behind it. Both these programs are constantly updating, so be aware of that when using the apps.
A unique thing, but most people know about Photoshop is that you can cut things out of a photo.
I think another great thing about Photoshop is the ability to be creative and reactive simultaneously... you can take things out of a photo and then add in or rearrange, you have SO much power here.
An interesting and very unique thing about InDesign is it’s ability to combine so many things together. Photoshop, illustrator, and Word can all come together for the app InDesign. This app is truly the holy grail of apps.
I mentioned above the website Lynda.com, however I really suggest this to learn about these programs. Also the ole Google search never hurts to try. I learn things daily on Google. I am starting to think I have a relationship with it, whoops. Many videos and tips are on Youtube as well. Another tip: do not be afraid to ask others for help when using these apps. No one is too smart or too dumb to learn these apps. They are vital to PR publishing today for sure.
Don’t get me wrong, both these apps are great and awesome to create designs for photos and interactive things, but you are the master of your design. What YOU think looks good or what YOU think is funky looking is all up to YOU. Do not let anyone tell you that certain things or ideas are bad… they may just have different taste than you. Let your guard down for a bit and try creating something that you normally would not. It is fun, give it a shot.
